The Evolution of Rupp’s Power Rigger System: From Gen1 to Gen2

Rupp Marine's Gen2 Power Rigger system—a lighter, smarter, and more intuitive version of our proven hydraulic control package. While many features have been upgraded, we’ve also kept the core components that made the original system so dependable. Here’s a detailed look at what’s new in Gen2—and what remains tried and true.

Rupp Z90 Outrigger Base: Ultimate Control and Performance for Sportfishing Reading The Evolution of Rupp’s Power Rigger System: From Gen1 to Gen2 5 minutes

At Rupp Marine, we’ve built our reputation on innovation, reliability, and craftsmanship that meets the demands of serious offshore anglers. When we first introduced the Power Rigger™ hydraulic outrigger system in 2008, it was a breakthrough in convenience and control. But as boats have evolved, so have the expectations for marine technology.

That’s why we developed the Gen2 Power Rigger system—a lighter, smarter, and more intuitive version of our proven hydraulic control package. While many features have been upgraded, we’ve also kept the core components that made the original system so dependable.

Here’s a detailed look at what’s new in Gen2—and what remains tried and true.

Smarter Electrical Enclosure with Plug-and-Play Simplicity

One of the most significant improvements in the Gen2 Power Rigger system is the redesigned electrical enclosure. The Gen1 model used terminal strip technology and required manual wiring inside the enclosure. In Gen2, we’ve eliminated that complexity with a sealed, factory-assembled printed circuit board (PCB).

This updated approach offers several benefits:

  • No internal wiring required — simply connect to the color-coded red and black leads using the provided snap-on connectors.

  • PCB replaces terminal strips — improving reliability, reducing wiring errors, and simplifying diagnostics, while being much more resistant to shock and vibration.

  • Sealed for protection — opening the box is no longer necessary and will void the warranty, preserving the integrity of the system.

  • Integrated circuit protection — including a push-button-style PCB reset located on the outside of the enclosure, replacing the old snap style breakers that tend to degrade over time.

Easier, Cleaner Power Connections

Powering your hydraulic system has never been easier. Gen2 includes clearly labeled leads and matching connectors for a clean, tool-free hookup. No need to open the box or splice wires—just stake, plug, and go. This not only reduces installation time but ensures a consistent, compliant electrical setup.

Wireless Remotes Now Included Standard

One of the most-requested upgrades is now standard on every Gen2 system: wireless remote control. Previously offered only as an add-on for standard systems, the new system, available for all models, includes two factory-paired remotes, offering Rupp's AutoDeploy™ and AutoRetrieve functionality with a simple double-tap.

These rugged, USB-rechargeable fobs allow for:

  • Hands-free outrigger deployment or retrieval from anywhere on the boat

  • Seamless switching between control locations

  • Increased safety while using the outrigger system

Note: Remote range and signal performance can vary based on vessel layout, bulkheads, and console materials.

Troubleshooting in the Field Made Easier

Serviceability is a core value at Rupp Marine, and Gen2 builds on that legacy. We’ve added LED indicator lights on the enclosure to assist with basic diagnostics in the field. They monitor power, switch communication etc.  These indicators help identify common faults quickly—minimizing downtime and simplifying support calls with our tech team.

In addition, all wiring connections are color-coded and paired with marine-grade Deutsch connectors. This plug-and-play architecture eliminates the need for soldering or manual pinouts during installation or service.

Improved System Logic on Deluxe Packages

For boaters running our Deluxe Gen2 Power Rigger package, there’s an added layer of safety and intelligence built into the control logic. In the Gen1 system, proper operation required physical locking rocker switches to guide users through a safe sequence when stowing or deploying outriggers.

Now, in Gen2, we’ve replaced those switches with onboard logic that automatically prompts users into the correct movement sequence.

This system prevents:

  • Accidental damage to hardtops or hydraulic locks from improper stowage

  • System strain from incorrect movement order

  • Misuse by inexperienced crew members

It’s a small but powerful improvement that helps protect both the boat and the gear during tight maneuvers or high-pressure situations.

What Stayed the Same: Proven Components That Still Lead the Industry

While the electronics and usability have been modernized, Gen2 Power Riggers still feature the same rugged components that have powered Rupp systems on tournament boats around the world.

Unchanged components include:

  • Our patented hydraulic locking mechanism, which ensures secure, positive latching in the stowed position and seamless release at the push of a button.

  • Custom aluminum hydraulic cylinders, precision-built in the U.S. and anodized to match your outriggers. These cylinders feature advanced sealing technology that minimizes leaks and reduces maintenance over time.

  • Reliable hydraulic circuit layout, over 17 years of proven performance. The hydraulic circuit provides consistent, responsive movement in all conditions.

These elements continue to set Rupp's design apart from other hydraulic outrigger systems and ensure long-term value for sportfishing teams and OEM builders alike.

Final Thoughts: The Gen2 Advantage

The Gen2 Power Rigger system represents more than just an upgrade—it’s a leap forward in performance, safety, and ease of use. Whether you're building a new vessel or refitting an existing tournament rig, Gen2 offers:

  • A compact, sealed, and intelligent control system
  • Reduced installation time with plug-and-play wiring
  • Safer operation with advanced movement logic
  • Standard wireless remote controls
  • Backward compatibility to GEN 1 system.
